A recurring issue in the city of Posadas, Misiones, has once again come to light: the lack of regulation and transparency in the taxi service. The experience of a passenger on a journey of just 2.8 kilometers highlights the enormous price difference between Uber and local taxis, casting doubt on the competitiveness and reliability of the latter.
In the morning, we took an Uber from the Posadas Bus Terminal, paying 2.571 argentine pesos for a ride of less than ten minutes. However, in the afternoon, when opting for a taxi to travel the same distance, the cost skyrocketed to 7.000 argentine pesos, more than double the price paid for the private transport service.
The most alarming part is that the taxi driver in question never activated the taximeter, a mechanism that should ensure fair and regulated fares. This practice, which has unfortunately become common in many argentine cities, highlights a clear abuse of passengers and a lack of control by local authorities.
Why doesn’t Posadas thrive?
Cases like this create a terrible image of the city for both tourists and residents. The unjustified price hike discourages the use of taxis and strengthens the preference for Uber and other transport platforms, which offer more competitive and transparent rates. Meanwhile, the lack of effective regulation of local taxis and the permissiveness toward these irregularities undermine confidence in the public transport system.
It is urgent for the authorities of Posadas to take action and enforce clear regulations for taxis, ensuring passengers are not victims of arbitrary charges. Without concrete measures, the problem will continue to affect the city's mobility and reputation.
